Lincombe Hall Hotel, Torquay

Our clients, Powis Hotels Ltd, had an aspiration to knit together the various disparate elements of their award-winning adult only hotel. Having spent several years sensitively remodelling the Victorian hotel buildings, we developed a design that integrated the historic fabric with new interventions which enhance guest legibility and provide visitors with a relaxing and luxurious spa experience. The £2m development was unveiled in December 2019 and is already hugely popular with visitors and locals. The three main elements of the scheme are a renovated building forming a sales and reception area, six tranquil treatment rooms for massages and pedicures under a grass roof, and a 500sqm brand new spa building. The latter contains state of the art steam rooms, a sauna, hydro pool and lane swimming pool, with a gym and changing facilities.

This project has recently been awarded 'Best Small Commercial Development' in the LABC Building Excellence Awards 2020.

EF Language School, Torbay

This scheme for twenty additional classrooms, laboratories and ancillary spaces provided this major international organisation with the means to deliver the fantastic learning experiences they desired. The existing building was too small and the spaces felt confined, and so this new structure perched atop the highest contour for miles around provided the solution. The new wing is accessed via a lift core set within he Victorian building’s shell. The curvaceous enclosing wall of the new facility responds to the topography of the site and reflects the castle-like design of the original gothic building below. The £3m plus building project included the new classroom building, links to and from the existing accommodation, and the complete internal remodelling of the existing restaurant, foyer, back of house and offices.

Development of six unique houses, Maidenfields, Torquay

Our experience in master-planning and design came to the forefront when handling this brownfield site in the middle of rural Devon for local developers. The uncompromisingly modern design ethos was viewed positively by Torbay Planning Authority in spite of the site’s location within with the Area of Great Landscape Value (AGLV). The strong aesthetic style echoes the layout of older villas nearby but reinterprets the architectural language to create something truly original. The scheme comprises four crisply rendered modern villas facing the road with two underground, grass-roofed houses facing the landscape. The effect is a group of buildings which respect the history and value of the area, without resorting to a mediocre pastiche.
